No place does Halloween like Disney. Something glorious happens, starting in August for Disneyworld and September for Disneyland, the parks are transferred into a Halloween wonderland. This is an all out trick or treat extravaganza. Don’t worry; they have healthy snacks for the kids as well. There is so much candy you will not be able to carry it all. In my experience, if you go through 2 to 3 lines, you will be set; they have teal bags as well for guests. The cast members are very helpful when picking out the treats you would like. While my 7 year old loves candy, there was only so much she could take. Starting last year in California, both parks are now open to the party. Be sure to catch a glimpse of Oogie Boogie watching you from above. My first piece of advice is to head over to the Haunted Mansion, Jack takes over and the results are frightfully amazing. You can see some of his handiwork throughout the park. For the little ones in California Adventure Vampirina makes an appearance, she is more sweet than spooky. In Disneyworld head over to Pirates of the Caribbean, you might get a fright or two!
Don’t forget to eat; Disney pulls out all the stops with their new seasonal menus. You can sample so many churros, and I mean so many. There will be some fun stuff to do during the day. However the real fun begins after dark at Mickey’s not so scary Halloween party. This does require a separate ticket fee. With the party ticket you can enter the parks at 4 pm, even though the party starts at 7. This is especially helpful if you are only planning to visit for the party. At 4 the non party ticket holders are ushered out of the parks. This is a great opportunity to get on your favorite rides with short lines. You will get to meet the Villains in the park. They will be walking around, but please do not offend the Evil Queen. Kidding aside they will be on Main Street in the Villain’s square for a proper meet and greet.
Do not miss the start of the parade! The headless horseman leads the parade of Villains as organized by Jack of course. You will see Villains that appear only at Halloween time. But do not get cursed. All the Disney magic in the world can’t undo that. And you need to stay for the fireworks. See if you can spot Zero helping Jack out.
Last but not least. Check out the shops. Every year Disney adds more Halloween merchandise. If you are anything like me, you have to have it! So prepare a budget, so things do not get out of hand. I always recommend waiting until the end of the night. The shops on Main Street and Downtown Disney are open after the parks are officially closed. If you must have something right then and there you can have the items shipped to your Disney property hotel in both Disneyworld and Disneyland for free. If you are not staying on property, you can have guest services hold it for you and pick it up at the end of the day. So you’re not carrying so much around all day.
I do hope you check out the most magical time of the year. Remember the Haunted mansion is always looking for one more happy haunt.
