Undoubtedly, 2019 has been filled to the brim with new video game releases. These games include Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Death Stranding, and Resident Evil 2, among numerous others. Being an avid gamer, I played several of these titles throughout the year, and over this time, I’ve developed personal favorites. I can’t wait to share them with you. So without further ado, let’s begin.
Devil May Cry V
Developed by the famous video game studio Capcom, Devil May Cry V is an action/adventure title that released on March 8, 2019. The story focuses on a cast of previous and new characters, who reunite to face an emerging demonic threat. Out of all the games released this year, Devil May Cry really stuck with me.
Why It’s a Favorite
This is a game that’s all about defeating demons, and doing so in style. That particular aspect is reflected perfectly in the gameplay; it’s sleek, smooth, and allows for countless combinations of devastating attacks. Correctly executing combos and raising your stylish rank, makes you feel like a true badass. Trust me, I know this from experience.
In addition, this title features an amazing soundtrack, one that ranges from beautiful melodies to fast-paced battle themes. The graphics are gorgeous to look at, too. Another high point, Devil May Cry has a cast of colorful characters, most of whom I grew to love. Going right along with the cast, this game’s story is also engaging the entire way through.
At the end of the day, Devil May Cry V is a very well-made video game with many positive aspects. And more importantly, it’s a whole lot of fun to play. Don’t miss this game! I’d highly recommend it.
Man of Medan
This title was developed by Supermassive Games, the same studio famous for creating the hit video game, Until Dawn. The two games are alike in many ways, with both maintaining a focus on horror and interactivity through choice. However, Man of Medan manages to stand on its own, and this is how it became one of my favorite games in 2019.
The story begins with a group of friends and their captain embarking on a diving trip. However, the vacation quickly takes a sinister turn after the group discovers a sunken plane wreck. Horrific and unexpected events soon unfold.
Why It’s a Favorite
I firmly believe every good horror game needs to build and maintain a suitable atmosphere. Well, Man of Medan certainly does that. Each sudden noise in the distance, every shadow skittering by, dim lighting; all these tactics combine to craft an atmosphere that truly invokes feelings of dread.
Furthermore, the accompanying choice system works quite well. Your decisions are distinct and have clear consequences later on in the story. Branching dialogue paths also add to the sense of interactivity. I honestly felt like I was shaping my own unique story.
Moreover, Man of Medan includes highly likeable characters that are fun to play as. These characters add to and enhance an interesting story that leads up to a big twist. Melded with beautiful, life-like graphics, Man of Medan is truly a horror game worth playing. It easily became one of my 2019 favorites.
Kingdom Hearts III
I’m a long-term fan of the Kingdom Hearts series. I’ve played almost every entry, excluding a couple of spin-off games. But, Kingdom Hearts III isn’t a favorite just because of sentimental attachment. It really is a well-executed video game full of magic and charm.
Developed by the acclaimed Square Enix team, Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG that came out on January 29, 2019. The story centers around Sora and his companions, Donald and Goofy. The three heroes embark on a dangerous journey to stop an evil force known as the Heartless. In doing so, they encounter many Disney/Pixar characters across their respective worlds.
Why It’s a Favorite
The combat of Kingdom Hearts is smooth and fairly easy to grasp, despite having deeper layers. There are a wide variety of additional aspects in the combat system, and because of them, there are endless ways to win in battle. Most of all, I adore just how pure and good-natured this video game is. It has such a strong focus on friendship and what it can accomplish, which is really nice to see. I felt this was incredibly endearing; it filled my heart with warmth.
Additionally, getting to meet and interact with my favorite Disney characters was absolutely amazing. Maybe I can never meet them in real life, but Kingdom Hearts III is probably the closest I can get. Being able to see these characters adds a layer of extra magic and charm to the game. Also, there are several original characters, who all fit perfectly into this magical universe.
Ultimately, Kingdom Hearts is an enchanting, endearing video game that provides great story and gameplay. Really, it was a joy to play through. I could see myself coming back to it in the near future, especially with new DLC releasing soon.
Resident Evil 2
2019 was a great year for Capcom, as this is yet another title developed by them. And of course, since it’s on my list, I wholly enjoyed Resident Evil 2 and the experience it provided. In fact, this may have been my favorite game of 2019.
The game is a remake of the original version that came out in the late 90’s. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to play the original title; so, I have little to compare between the two games. However, I did have the fortune of playing the remake, and to this day, it remains one of my favorite gaming experiences ever.
The story of Resident Evil 2 centers around a rookie cop, Leon Kennedy, and a college student, Claire Redfield. These two unwittingly become trapped in Raccoon City as it suffers from a horrific zombie outbreak. Both characters must fight through hordes of nightmarish monsters to survive the ruined city and escape.
Why It’s a Favorite
There are a plethora of reasons RE2 has earned a spot on this list. For one, it creates an incredibly immersive, frightening atmosphere. This is maintained throughout the entire game. Groans of the undead sound faintly in the background, alerting the player that monsters are just waiting to feast. Lighting is dim and eerie in most areas, obscuring lurking zombies.
Every time I turned a corner, my heart pounded from pondering what might be waiting. I never knew quite what to expect, and that sensation left me constantly feeling tense. This title truly invokes a feeling of terror, as you traverse cramped corridors. Further enhancing the already impressive atmosphere, the sound design is also amazing. Everything sounds realistic, which makes the whole adventure even more creepy.
Moreover, RE2 has smooth, easy to grasp combat and gameplay mechanics. This makes it simple for anyone to pick up the game and start their horrific journey. There’s a good enemy variety, as well. These creatures range from decaying zombies to skinless, dog-like monsters with razor sharp tongues; but they all look as if they came directly from the darkest nightmares. Additionally, this game boasts a cast of intriguing, fleshed out characters. I genuinely enjoyed playing as these characters and seeing their stories come to life.
Overall, Resident Evil 2 is an excellent video game in many aspects. It effortlessly crafts a terrifying atmosphere, while providing smooth, enjoyable gameplay. Truly, this game is a gem of both the horror genre, and the video game industry as a whole. It deserves a special place in every gamer’s library.
