Why Story of Seasons is a Worthwhile Video Game
Released exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS on March 31, 2015, Story of Seasons is a life/farming simulation game. It was published by XSEED Games and developed by Marvelous Entertainment. This is part of a series known as Bokujo Monogatari in Japan; according to the Story of Seasons asset pack, millions of copies have sold and many entries have released there. Basically, Story of Seasons is a continuation of the series, but localized for overseas audiences, and with new, added features.
The game begins with the protagonist finding a pamphlet in the mail. Said pamphlet was sent from a village called Oak Tree Town and is requesting applications from new farmers. Desiring a life change, the main character applies, and in just one week, they’ve been accepted as the town’s newest farmer. Afterwards, the character soon arrives in Oak Tree Town. It is here that they start training under a veteran farmer and building their own farm, forming lasting relationships along the way.
At its core, Story of Seasons is a life simulation game with elements of farming and RPG gameplay. The game includes two separate difficulty modes, known as “Seedling” and “Normal.” The protagonist and their corresponding farm are fully customizable, with the option to change hair color, hairstyle, decor, and more. In addition, this title contains an enhanced range of seeds and pets to acquire. Furthermore, there is a large cast of colorful characters to meet and befriend. Players even have the option to engage in romantic partnerships with eligible bachelors and bachelorettes throughout the town. In doing so, they can eventually get married and even have children in-game.
This title includes a host of multiplayer options as well. These settings allow gamers to tour each other’s farms, grow crops together, and even exchange gifts. In this way, players can help one another work toward and achieve the ultimate goal of the game. This aspiration is to revive Oak Tree Town to its former prosperity, specifically by farming and doing business with various vendors.
Why I Recommend This Game
Undoubtedly, gameplay is one of the best parts of this release. The controls are simple, but smooth and easy for players of all ages to pick up on. Story of Seasons is quite user friendly, providing helpful tutorials whenever needed. Additionally, the soundtrack contains soft, peaceful melodies, which match perfectly with the game’s overall tone. The graphics are beautiful and detailed, especially for a 3DS title. I especially liked the character portraits and seasonal animations; they’re absolutely gorgeous.
Unlike many similar titles, this video game has a variety of customizable options. These do a great job of creating immersion and making the journey seem more personal. Truly, they’re a wonderful addition for this type of game. In turn, there are always more items, characters, and outfits to unlock, and similarly, this provides a constant goal to pursue. Even if a player has completed all the main quests, there’s always something new to discover.
Story of Seasons also has a plethora of unique, interesting characters to meet. Although it’s optional, I found befriending the townsfolk to be very fun and entertaining. I genuinely wanted to find out more about each one, and this information is slowly revealed through conversations and cutscenes. It certainly helps that the individual characters have distinct personalities and mannerisms. While playing, I honestly felt I could compare certain characters to people I know in real life; they’re that realistic. Like the in-game friendships, the romantic ones are just as fulfilling to pursue. Each relationship has its own style and progression. It’s intriguing to see the significant and subtle ways they differ, and this feature makes it satisfying to explore different romantic possibilities.
Personally, my favorite aspect of Story of Seasons is its sheer playability. The game simplifies real-life farming procedures enough that they’re easy and fun to execute, but the player still feels as if they are learning something. Caring for animals is another neat part, especially since the animals are so cute and loveable. Furthermore, it’s easy to pick up and play the game whenever. It can be played in short bursts or for hours at a time, without losing any of the experience. This is a title that gives endless hours of entertainment, featuring numerous activities to keep players farming. Most of all, Story of Seasons provides an attractive escape from reality; the light-hearted tone of the game makes it a calm, relaxing one to play. This isn’t the case for many other video games.
In conclusion, I believe this is a truly fantastic game. From its soundtrack, to its graphics, to its characters, Story of Seasons is an entertaining, engaging experience. It’s one that immerses players from the very beginning, giving them a respite from the stress of real life. Whatever the reason for playing, this is a fun, addictive game that shouldn’t be missed.
