I was so looking forward to seeing “Us.” I’m a bit disappointed.

The Wilsons are on vacation in Santa Cruz, California. Scenes from “Us” were filmed in Santa Cruz. On a day at the beach, their young son Jason wanders off. Mother is protective of her family stemming from a childhood trauma. Jason is soon found and the family returns home. That night, four mysterious people break into Adelaide’s childhood home where they’re staying. The Wilsons are shocked to find out that the intruders look like them. The fake family is a grotesque version of the originals.
Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave
Winston Duke (Black Panther)
Shahadi Wright Joseph (The Lion King, 2019)
Evan Alex (Kidding)
“Us” has some really scary, unsettling scenes. The first time the grotesque family appears is creepy. Even creepier is when you see who they are and what they are about. Twisted duplicates of the family that is living in Adelaide’s (the mom) family home in a lovely area, Santa Cruz, California. The nefarious ‘copy’ family has bad intentions. The scenes that show the real family coming to terms and fighting back are delicious.
It is only when the Wilsons escape their duplicate family and get to their neighbor’s home that they discover a sinister plot that rocks their world to the core.
The acting is good in “Us.”
Much of the “Us” is less than stellar. It isn’t horrible, it isn’t to be avoided at all costs. It should be saved to watch on your cable’s On Demand service.
This film is a very modern, very updated reimagining of “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” There are no ‘pods,’ but the rest of what there is shows the similarities. People who look just like you, but a more violet and weird you, try to get you, and replace you.
Someone needs to come up with some new synopsis for horror films.
- Drew Goddard who wrote and directed “Cabin in the Woods.” An awesome and unique film.
- The Blair Witch Project whose two directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez are still making good films
- The films V/H/S and V/H/S2 are examples of great indie horror. These films are throwbacks to films of the late 70s and 80s. It features a main beginning with several stories and inbetween parts there is a whole different plot going on. Wonderful, scary films.
You can’t count on the trailers
The long and short of it is, the ads for “Us” film, the trailers made this look so good (yes, I know that’s something that many filmmakers and studios do.) Acting was good, atmosphere was good.
“Us” dragged in places, many films drag and are still good. If there is a sequel, and the film certainly left open the door for one, I hope that the script is better. My disappointment is not with the actors nor director…it is the script that needed some tweaking.
