Why What Remains of Edith Finch is a Great Game
What Remains of Edith Finch is a narrative-driven adventure game, set entirely in first-person. This video game was developed by Giant Sparrow, the same studio behind The Unfinished Swan. Respectively, it was published by Annapurna Interactive, and released on April 25, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
The game focuses heavily on story, following a young woman named Edith Finch, as she explores her old family home in hopes of unraveling a certain mystery. This mystery just happens to be that Edith is the only living member of her family. All of her relatives, young and old, have already died, leaving her alone. As Edith searches the Finch home, she uncovers locked rooms, hidden passages, and secret areas, which hold clues for deciphering her family’s past. She finds story after story, each one detailing a different family member on their day of death.
These sequences are shown in flashbacks, and all of them have a distinct tone and style. For example, the first story follows a Finch child, Molly, as she suddenly transforms into a cat. In her new form, Molly leaps out the window and onto a tree, navigating from branch to branch. She eventually falls, only to transform into an owl before hitting the ground. As this owl, Molly swoops down to a field to catch unassuming prey in her talons. Molly Finch goes through a few more transformations, before the story ends on an ominous note.
There’s another sequence involving a baby of the Finch family, Gregory. In this story, you control Gregory while he’s in the bathtub playing with a toy frog. You must launch the frog to other areas to knock additional toys into the tub. Once all the toys have been recovered, they begin leaping and jumping through the water in a grand performance. This part really encompasses the viewpoint of a child, and the way they find wonder in even the smallest things. This is the kind of creativity you can expect from What Remains of Edith Finch.
Why I Recommend This Game
To me, this video game is one that stands out from similar indie games, and even AAA titles. It has great, vibrant graphics that are pleasant to look at, and they effortlessly bring the story to life. In addition, the voice acting is quite good, giving characters their own distinct voice and personality, while also adding emotional depth to the plot. The soundtrack is lovely as well, helping to stress the tone of each individual sequence.
Speaking of tone, What Remains of Edith Finch has varying degrees of it. Each part has a distinct style and mood to it, ranging from wondrous to melancholic. This keeps the game fresh, always having something different to offer. You can never predict exactly how the next section will play out. The gameplay itself is fun and immersive, causing the player to feel almost as if they’re present and experiencing these events along with the characters. Actions are also smooth and simple to carry out, making this game good for experienced gamers and beginners alike.
Although every aspect of this game is expertly crafted, I believe the narrative is the most impressive part. The family stories are all interesting on their own, and despite varying tone, weave together seamlessly. These parts join to enhance the overarching plot, which is well executed and moving. The overall narrative takes players through moments of verdant joy, sorrow, loss, and even wonder. It’s a game that truly makes the player feel, which is no easy feat. At times, I was even reminded of my own family while playing. Although the stories are presented in fantastical ways, the characters are grounded and relatable.
I firmly believe this game is one worthy of playing, and I think it’s one every player would enjoy. It has abundant creativity, possibly the most I’ve seen in a video game so far. In addition, the differing style keeps it fresh, interesting, and unpredictable. In conclusion, What Remains of Edith Finch is a fantastic game that immerses players in a highly emotional journey, all while appealing to their senses of sight and sound. I’d greatly recommend it to every gamer.
